Our Synthesis course was created and designed to decode the complexities of modern synthesis. Every week we will walk you through how different types of synths work, we will help you identify and understand the components of synths. We will train your ears to identify the features of sounds from music you love and give you a system to recreate those sounds. By the end of the course, you will have a working understanding of synthesis for the modern music producer and the confidence to step away from synth presets and create your own unique sounds.

What is this course about?

Learn how synthesizers work and how to create the sounds you are hearing from your favorite artists and even better, how to create your own.  Historical background, essential synth facilities such as oscillators, filters, and envelopes will be explored: what they do, how they work together, and how to go about creating sounds beyond the manufacturer’s preset patches.

Upon finishing this course you will know:

  • How to identify just about any synthesizer by type, old or new, and how to use it
  • How to create any sound of your own concept using a hardware or software synthesizer
  • How to incorporate synthesizers and synth-style processing techniques into DAW programs like Ableton Live
  • How to distinguish where your favorite “retro” synth sounds come from along with other classic sounds like those made by Moog, ARP and Oberheim

  • Prior musical experience or knowledge of Live is not required

HOW IT WORKS

  • Every week we unlock a new lesson including, videos, project files, worksheets, samples and assignments
  • The instructor will provide 1-on-1 video feedback on assignments every second week 
  • During the course you will have six 15 minute 1-on-1 video chats with your instructor
  • Group chats will be held every second week to ask specific questions and go over assignments
  • You can network and collaborate with your classmates on a daily basis in our private online classroom
  • You will have lifetime access to this course's resources and 12 week's of access to the instructor.

HOW MUCH TIME A WEEK SHOULD I BUDGET?

  • Each lesson will contain 30 minutes to 1.5 hours of video lectures. You can review whenever you wish and as often as you want.
  • Assignments will take between 15 minutes to 1.5 hours. Submission of assignments is optional however, for every assignment you submit you will receive personalized video feedback on your assignment.
  • Each week there is either a group online chat (1 hour) or 1on1 chat (15 minute) with your instructor.

  • Synthesizer modules – (VCO, VCF, VCA, CV processors, LFO, Wave Shapers)
  • Common synthesizer layouts
  • Different methods of synthesis (subtractive, additive, FM, wavetable etc.)
  • Incorporating synth elements into audio production
  • Sequencing in Live using combinations of soft-synths and hardware
  • The merits and pitfalls of using vintage equipment vs. new
  • Hardware vs. software - finding the right synth for you
  • Introduction to Analog, Operator, Massive and FM8

  • Every Saturday at 2pm MT we unlock a new lesson including, videos, project files, worksheets samples and assignments
  • The instructor will provide 1-on-1 video feedback to students for course assignments
  • During the course you will have four 15 minute 1-on-1 video chats with your instructor
  • Group calls will be held once weekly to ask specific questions and go over assignments
  • You can network and collaborate with your classmates on a daily basis on our private online classroom
  • You will able to access the online videos and resources for 1 year

HOW MUCH TIME A WEEK SHOULD I BUDGET?

  • Each lesson will contain 30 minutes to 1.5 hours of video lectures. Some students watch the videos several times.
  • Assignments will take between 15 minutes to 1.5 hours. Submission of assignments is optional however, for every assignment you submit you will receive personalized video feedback on your assignment.
  • Each week there is either a group online chat (1 hour Skype) or 1on1 chat (15 minute Skype) with your instructor.

What does a typical week look like?

Each week starts with you logging into our online classroom and going through the lesson for that week. Each lesson will consist of detailed videos and projects files explaining that week's topics and techniques. You will have opportunity to interact online with your fellow students and instructor. Each week you will also be given an assignment based upon that lesson, for video feedback from your instructor. Every week will finish with either a 1on1 video chat with your instructor or a live video group chat.
